ARTIST STATEMENT:

Art was not always an important part of my life. Growing up in a Mexican household, my family viewed art as a hobby that made pretty, but useless, things - a viewpoint that’s not uncommon for people who grew up with a similar latinx background to my own. We did not have the time or money to visit museums and take art classes. I did not learn to respect it until I went to college and gained the privilege of an artist’s education. Accessibility is essential to me, which is why I avoid things like classical references that might be a barrier to someone.

This project is the culmination of my photogram work, where a photogram is an image captured on light sensitive paper without a camera. I strongly encourage you to take your own interpretation out of my work.
This work inside takes the traditional idea of a photogram to a new direction for me. These photograms transcend more traditional art mediums such as painting and ink draw-ings by combining various art media into this one format.

This project was made possible by the Steven Daniel Smallen Memorial Fund. Thank you very much for your generosity and support.
