ARTIST STATEMENT

My artwork is centered around gender performance, traditional ideas of hegemonic femininity and masculinity, and how the female body is portrayed in a patriarchal society. I passionately create work around these concepts as I draw from my personal experiences, so my body of work is called The Personal is Political. As a feminist, I question what I consider empowerment and if my actions of reclamation are still perpetuating male dominance and female subordination, which is deeply embedded in our social structures. I produce life-sized charcoal drawings that create an experience of discomfort and disdain, the feelings that I have when confronted with images of women in extreme situations. To accomplish this, I use extreme tonal values to create a cinematic and timeless aesthetic, so there is a longevity that resonates with my audience.
