ARTIST STATEMENT

The ocean is absolutely terrifying–well, at least to me it is. She is a powerful force, dark and eerie and full of the unknown, an alien I wouldn’t dare mess with again. Despite our rocky history, I think my fear is in part due to the undiscovered nature of this massive part of our world. Only five percent of the ocean has actually been explored, leaving the majority of it untouched with only our imagination to fill in the gaps.

I chose to fill in these gaps and create an alternate world that these sea creatures reside in. With a focus on the truly sublime, surreal qualities the deep sea possesses, I aimed to convey the mystical power and force of this realm. To be honest, we have no clue what resides out there–why not take the liberty of defining these unknown communities? I utilized acrylic house paint, spray paint, and oil paint on canvas for my pieces. In order to convey an ethereal, otherly world, I concentrated on manipulating color, light, and shadows throughout my work.

These works were made possible by the Steven Daniel Smallen Memorial Fund. Thank you for your support.
