CPSCI 105-01: Making the Web Speak

Homework 2

due: January 30, 2007

Do the following four tasks. You should allocate an hour to do the first exercise. (This time estimate assumes that you have already read section 10 of the Basic UNIX Tutorial.) You can look over the rest and decide how long you think they'll take.

1. emacs

(If you haven't already read through section 10 of A Basic UNIX Tutorial you should do so immediately.)

You will be using emacs a lot this semester, so work through the interactive emacs tutorial. (To do this, connect to warp, fire up emacs, and enter C-h t).

2. bash

In your home directory, create a child directory named homework.

3. Website Analysis

Find a website that you think is well-designed. Identify five features that you think contribute to its good design and explain in 1-2 sentences why each feature contributes to your ability to use the website effectively.

Find a website that you don't think is very well-designed. Identify five features of the website (they don't all have to be bad, but presumably some will be). For each feature you've identified, explain in 1-2 sentences the problem (or if it's not a problem, explain how it contributes to usability).

In your homework directory on warp, create a text document in emacs containing this assignment. Give it an appropriate filename with the extension text (for example, you could name it websites.text ).

4. Disability Studies

By Tuesday's class, you'll have read the first two chapters of Rod Michalko's The Two-in-One. Eventually, we'll be discussing this book in class. To prepare for this, do the following: for each of the two chapters you've read, write two paragraphs: (1) a paragraph summarizing the chapter and (2) a personal paragraph recording either your reaction to the chapter, or a discussion of a particular point you found to be of interest.

In your homework directory on warp, create a text document in emacs containing this assignment. Give it an appropriate filename with the extension text (for example, you could name it michalko.text ).
