Multimedia Teaching Materials in CD-ROMs

  • China Scene-A Multimedia Course for Advanced Chinese, two CD-ROMs (1.2GB), Cheng & Tsui Company, Boston, 2001, is a combination of interactive multimedia of texts, video, audio, graphics and animations, containing over 130,000 pieces of media. Built-in activities include interactive instruction on vocabulary, grammar, paced-reading (entire text, individual sentence), video-text, video-alone, character text, cultural notes, and interactive exercises of dictations, and listening comprehension. Other features include on-line instruction and help, free navigation, multiple texts: simplified and traditional characters and Pin-yin, standalone. The software is equipped for China Scene: A Chinese Multimedia Course written by Hong Gang Jin, De Bao Xu, and James Hargett, published by Cheng & Tsui Company, Boston, 2000.

  • Chinese Breakthrough-Learning Chinese Language through TV and Newspapers, CD-ROM (580MB), Cheng & Tsui Company, Boston, 1996; is a combination of interactive multimedia of texts (traditional and simplified character), video, audio, graphics and animations. Over 100,000 pieces of media are linked with five activities: introduction, dialogs, authentic video and multiple choices, newspaper reading, and vocabulary; equipped for Chinese Breakthrough---Learning Chinese Language through TV and Newspapers

  • Chinese Primer-A Multimedia Course for Beginning Chinese, two CD-ROMs (1.3GB), being reviewed by Princeton University Press for its publication, used at Hamilton College since 1996, is a combination of interactive multimedia of texts, video, audio, graphics and animations, containing over 150,000 pieces of media. Built-in activities include interactive instruction on vocabulary, grammar, paced-reading (entire text, individual sentence), video-text, video-alone, character text, cultural notes, and interactive exercises of dictations, listening comprehension, character writing exercises (over 700 Chinese characters) with glossary and alphabetic index. Other features include on-line instructions, free navigation, and multiple texts: traditional character and Pin-yin, standalone. This software is equipped for Chinese Primer, a 6 units, 25 lessons material, written by Da-Duan Chen et al, Princeton University Press.

  • Chinese Mother, CD-ROM (545MB), multimedia interactive software, equipped for a supplementary material for advanced Chinese: a TV play Chinese Mother, a multimedia course incorporating video, audio, texts, linked instructions and exercises, used at Hamilton College since 1999.

  • Purchasing a Bicylce, CD-ROM (490MB), multimedia interactive software, equipped for a supplementary material for advanced Chinese: a TV play Purchasing a Bicylce, a multimedia course incorporating video, audio, texts, linked instruction and exercises, used at Hamilton College since 1999.


Independent Software for Chinese Language Teachers

  • Hamilton Templates I and II, CD-ROM, was created for Chinese (two-byte) language teachers to create their own multimedia materials without getting into technical details in 1999, and have been continuously developed/improved after being presented at CALACO'99/00/01, NEALL'99/00, TCLT'21st (Hamilton College, June, 2000), ACTFL'99/00/01, and 2001 LLEEP Conference at Ohio State University (April 20-21, 2001), etc. Hamilton Templates have also been instructed at one day-workshops at University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (1999), TCLT'21 (Hamilton College, June 8-10, 2000), Yale University (March, 2001), and Ohio State University (June, 2001) and many liberal arts colleges since its creation. Hamilton Templates I and II consist of two components: TEXTS (I) and EXERCISES (II). TEXTS includes audio-visual based vocabulary learning/practice, reading/listening comprehension, speaking exercises, grammar/cultural notes, and video/text-based instructions. EXERCISES includes dictation (vocabulary/sentence), listening/speaking exercises, and writing comprehension. Hamilton Templates allows the language teachers to freely link video and texts, video/texts and speech, and video/texts and designed instructions and exercises. Finished Templates will be a series of standalone program, which can be used either in a language lab or a classroom, or on a personal computer. Some more features of the software are listed below for further illustration:
