Requirements for the Concentration

in Creative Writing

 

A concentration in Creative Writing consists of ten courses, which must include the following:

Five courses in literature written in English, including:

  • English 150: Reading Literature
  • Two from among the following Genre Courses:
    • English 204 (Poetry)
    • English 205 (The Novel)
    • English 206 (Drama)
  • Two electives, one of which must be a 300-level writing-intensive course. With the permission of the Department, students may use one upper-level course in a foreign-language literature, studied in the original language, as one of the required literature credits.

Four courses in Creative Writing, including:

  • English/Creative Writing 215 (Introduction to Creative Writing); concentrators must take this course by the end of their sophomore year.
  • English/Creative Writing 304 (Poetry)
  • English/Creative Writing 305 (Fiction)
  • English/Creative Writing 419 (The Seminar)

Students who plan to concentrate in Creative Writing and who are also considering study abroad should discuss their plans with the chair of the English Department as early in their studies as possible, certainly no later than the fall semester of their sophomore year.


Foreign Language Requirement

 

Beginning with the class of 2001, concentrators in both English Literature and Creative Writing must fulfill a foreign language requirement, following one of three options:

1. Completion of college coursework in a language other than English through the fourth-semester level (or demonstration of equivalent competence on a placement examination accepted by Hamilton);

2. Completion of college coursework in a language other than English through the third semester (or demonstration of equivalent competence on a placement examination accepted by Hamilton) and one linguistics course: Anthropology 125 (Language and Culture), Anthropology 201 (Linguistic Theory), or another linguistics course approved by the English Department;

3. Completion of both a course in Old English Literature (studied in the original language) and a course in the history of the language, taken at Hamilton or approved by the English Department for transfer credit.

 


 For the minor in Creative Writing:

 

A minor in Creative Writing consists of English 150, Creative Writing 215, either Creative Writing 204 and 304, (or 205 and 305), and Creative Writing 419. Students concentrating in English may not minor in Creative Writing.
