Just as important as their concerns as auteurs, filmmakers seek global distribution for their work. This means direct engagement with the ideological struggles of the modern world: the role of women, the traditions of honor, the exercise of power and leadership, and the preservation of the planet's resources. As entertainment, film naturalizes the status quo. Film art and film studies can challenge the effects of passive consumerism. This study will discuss the importance of independent and alternative cinemas to Hollywood productions in the US and abroad.
