Class in Context: Intersections of Class, Race, Gender, Sexuality and Nationality

Social class is a crucial but often overlooked factor in our lives. Most Americans identify themselves as middle class and act as if that status were irrelevant to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” in the United States today. As a result class is erased. At the same time many social scientists consider class as a singular experience and place marker, apart from other distinctions of human identity. What is lost is the complexity of class.

In 2004-2005, the Kirkland Project will tackle the topic of social class in the U.S. as it intersects with race, gender, sexuality, nationality and ability, exploring how it shapes work, family, education, public policy, art and health.

These crucial discussions will surely aid students and faculty in opening up long overdue dialogues about class in the U. S.
