My research interests focus on two different issues in behavioral neuroscience. One research program uses electrophysiological techniques to investigate the activity of individual neurons in the rat superior colliculus, a midbrain area that is involved in sensory processing and visuomotor orientation. Our recent work indicates that sensory processing in this location changes dramatically as a function of the behavioral state of the animal, and that many collicular neurons become active when rats guide their behavior towards significant stimuli. A second area of research concerns developmental psychobiology, and my students and I have conducted several experiments that indicate that olfactory learning in neonatal rats can be affected by manipulations of several neurotransmitters in the posttraining period. In particular, we have demonstrated a role of the dopaminergic and glutaminergic neurotransmitter systems on "consolidation" processes in memory.
