Tips for Working in Groups
 ---------------------------
For many people, working in groups can be difficult, especially when part of their grade is dependant upon the functioning of the group. When groups function poorly, they can be uncomfortable and unproductive for everyone involved. However, when groups function well, many students find that they have insights that they never would have had when working alone. Therefore, I am giving you some tips on how to make your groups work well and on what you need to do to make the experience productive for yourself and for other group members.

When groups work well
•    Group members come to class prepared
•    Each group member participates in the group discussion and offers his or her opinions, arguments, and contributions
•    Group members encourage participation from those who are quiet
•    Group members are friendly and civil towards each other
•    Time in groups is spent on task rather than on socializing
•    Every group member wants to do as well as possible on the group task
•    The work is divided up evenly among group members, with no individual taking over or being forced to do more than their share

When groups have problems, they should spend some time trying to work out the problems on their own. Often, it turns out that interpersonal problems are just a matter of miscommunication. Also, remember that you are not required to like the other members of your group. Unless the problem is related to the proper functioning of the group, leave it outside class. If your group can not resolve any given problem on your own, schedule a time to talk to me. I will do my best to work out a solution that enables the group to do the best work possible.

Finally, the biggest obstacle that many groups face is in finding time when all members can meet. I encourage you to spend more time working together outside of class, but if you find that to be very difficult, you have other options. The Blackboard site for the course includes group collaboration tools that will allow you to email and chat with group members, and you will have some time in class to work together. If you are really struggling, please come see me and I will help you find ways to make your work time more efficient so that you can accomplish what you need to in the limited time you have.
