Department of Theatre and Dance

Special Opportunities

Members of Carole Bellini's sophomore seminar and theatre students join the Bread and Puppet Theater for an all-day workshop and performance on October 10, 2004.

Students have diverse performance, directing, choreography and design opportunities. Auditions for main stage theatre productions are open to all students. Each year faculty and students produce two or three plays directed by faculty, two dance concerts choreographed by faculty, and as many as 15 productions directed, choreographed, designed, performed and/or produced by students.

Students and faculty participate in the national American College Dance Festival. Concentrators have taught and performed at local schools and art centers, as well as with regional dance companies and summer theatres. Students interested in arts administration gain experience as the department box office and house manager. Many theatre concentrators secure internships with summer theatres after their junior year.

Visiting Artists: The Hamilton Performing Arts Series features music, theatre and dance from around the world. In addition to seeing the work of these guests, students participate in workshops, seminars and classes taught by the artists. Visiting artists and master teachers have included H.T. Chen and Dancers, Eric Bogosian, Aquila Theatre Company, Pilobolus, Dance Brazil, Feld Ballets/NY, Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane, Anne Bogart, Saratoga International Theatre Institute, Fred Curchak, Meredith Monk, Bread and Puppet Theater, Joe Goode Performance Group and Sweet Honey in the Rock.

Prizes:
The College awards several prizes and honors including the William K.-M. Tennant Memorial Scholarship, the Carter Family Prize Scholarship, the Edwin Barrett Prize, the Karen Williams Theatre Prize and Senior Prizes in Theatre and in Dance.

Off-Campus Study: Many theatre majors participate in the study abroad programs offered by Hamilton or other institutions, spending a full semester in intensive theatre programs to augment their Hamilton courses or to pursue specific concentrations not offered at the College.
