ARTIST STATEMENT
Why does a function remove the possibility of something being art? Furniture is always kept separate from the category of fine art, and though it has the potential to be both artistically and functionally fulfilling. My senior thesis aims to tread the thin distinction between sculptural furniture, and functional sculpture. My pieces are made with consideration of the human body, how we physically interact with certain objects, and how that relates to our experience with those objects. My work intends to be visually poignant, with concealed function that changes how one interprets the piece. In the furniture-making tradition, I use wood as my medium, but I use paint, stains, hardware, and other materials to create further meaning.
