The McCormick Lab is located in Hamilton’s newly constructed $56 million Science Center. This facility houses the Departments of Chemistry, Biology, Geoscience and Physics and was designed to facilitate collaborative research and shared access to analytical facilities. Our primary research space is comprised of a 500 square foot laboratory plus shared space in an adjoining laboratory of approximately 1000 square feet. Equipment within Dr. McCormick’s lab include a Agilent 5975C gas chromatograph mass spectrometer with parallel FID and ECD detectors, Micromeritics TriStarII surface area analyzer, Mettler-Toledo T50 autotitrator and pH stat, anaerobic glove bag, class 100 laminar flow hood, fume hood, Hungate anaerobic culture transfer apparatus, multiple temperature controlled water baths / shakers, thermal gradient incubator for Arrhenius studies. Nikon Labphot microscope, microcentrifuges and ample support supplies.
Shared resources within the department include the Microscale Imaging Facility (MIF), which houses a Quanta 400 Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope with Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (ESEM/EDS) and a JEOL 1200EX II Transmission Electron Microscope. Other support equipment within the department include an autoclave, lyophilizer, Milli-Q water purifier, environmental chambers, ultra-low freezers, Sorvall RC-5B centrifuges and a Sorvall ultra centrifuge. Other available analytical resources commonly used by our group include a Nikon Eclipse E600 Epifluorescence/optical microscope with CCD digital camera, a Rigaku MiniFlex X-Ray diffraction unit and a Thermoelectron Almega XR dispersive Raman microscope with optical fiber probe and bulk analysis chamber. Additional resources within our lab and the Department of Biology that enable molecular approaches for microbial ecological studies include PCR thermocyclers, a denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) apparatus, gel documentation equipment, and a LI-COR 4300L DNA sequencer.
