Soph222 Freaks - Survey of the Senior Class

 

 

Students were asked: "Would you consider the following examples to be freaks? Think about how you would probably react when first encountering them." Students responding positively out of 21 respondents are shown below.

There are many definitions and interpretations of the word 'Freak'.

Webster’s…. Any abnormal animal, person or plant.

Student definitions from the survey:

1. People who are weird or scary.  People who look different, or act different, but they have to have mean intent.  The difference between an “abnormal” person and a “freak” is a freak is an abnormal normal person with a weird or scary personality.

2. Someone with some sort of physical abnormality. ...deformities and stuff.

3.Definition - Freaks are people born with severe abnormalities. And circus people, they’re trying to be freaks.

4. She claims to have never thought of or judged people to be freaks. The reason is as a child she was raised Unitarian. (quote “freak is not in my vocabulary”)

5. Umm...people who make me really uncomfortable. They don't neccessarily have to look strange, but.. even if they just create an awkward atmosphere."

6. Definition: Different from cultural norm and may vary on environment (campus to town).

7. I think people who are freaks have a characteristic about them that is not amongst the majority of people. Like people who where all black and piercings. Or don’t keep themselves up to date.

8. a. Probably someone who is so different from me that I can’t, no matter what, understand where they’re coming from. b. People who I have a hard time understanding why they believe in what they believe in.
