Poetry of the Species: The Romance of Science in Victorian Culture
A study of mixed and emerging genres in Victorian culture in the 1880s. My thesis is that the triumph of scientific representations of nature and humankind resulted in a crisis among writers and artists otherwise committed to “realism.” In a wide range of works, strange experiments with genre demonstrate in formal terms the deep-seated conflict within Victorian culture between scientific materialism and a romantic belief in the imagination as the guarantee of knowledge and the grounds for “culture” itself.

“Where Author and Auteur Meet: The New Film Adaptations of Literary Works”
This article looks at the ways in which directors like Joan Campion and Patricia Rozema among others, are using the masterworks of Henry James and Jane Austen to display their own artistic and critical perspectives on 19th century culture. No longer interested in faithfulness to the text, these directors have adapted the critical interpretations of contemporary scholars to create films which appeal to the ideological and social concerns of today’s viewers.
