Conclusion
We can argue for days whether or not Ebonics is a language. But if it is or not,
what is important about the Oakland School Board resolution is that it encourages
and celebrates the differences of people. The idea that Ebonics is just "bad"
has been embedded in the minds of people for so long that they think that children
just speak it out of spite and need to be corrected by punishment. Teachers have
known that this is untrue for a long time but out of respect for the African American
culture, they have not done anything. By treating Ebonics as a different system,
Standard English can be taught to help students become aware of the differences between
the two, and use one without losing the pride in the other.
Ultimately, this is a political issue. Recognition of AAVE cannot hurt anyone. Children
must learn that their culture and way of speaking is just as important and valid
as any other culture and way of speaking. Until people become aware of the importance
of celebrating differences across America, we sit and wait for the day when we can
be proud of the eclectic mix that comprises the United States of America.
