COVID-19 HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICIES

These policies have been updated to reflect the College COVID Task Force issued May 11, 2023, and continue to be informed by the Center for Disease Control's current recommendations for possible COVID-19 exposure and if you have COVID, as well as guidance on mitigations for instrumental and vocal music performance from the UC Boulder aerosol study.

  • While masking is no longer required, we will continue to be a mask-friendly campus. As of May 11th, Hamilton will no longer require students and employees to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. However, everyone is strongly encouraged to continue following CDC guidelines for vaccination and booster doses.
  • Anyone experiencing any symptoms of COVID should mask, self test, and stay home if they test positive, following the CDC's isolation guidelines. The department strongly recommends that you have a supply of rapid tests on hand, and use them if you are exposed or experience symptoms.
  • Standing air purifiers are situated in each of the classrooms, rehearsal spaces, and practice rooms to supplement the HVAC systems. Users of these spaces are encouraged to have these running while in use.

Practice rooms:

  • Anyone experiencing any symptoms of COVID may not use the practice rooms until they are symptom free.
  • Brass players must use paper towels or a cloth towel for condensation in any Music Department space (practice room, classroom, stage, etc.). Do not empty spit valves directly into garbage cans or onto the floor. Always clean up after yourself.
  • Ventilation: Standing air purifiers are situated in classrooms, rehearsal spaces, and practice rooms to supplement the HVAC systems. Woodwind and brass players and singers should have these running when using the practice rooms.

Private lessons and classes: Depending on local conditions and at the discretion of the instructor, masking and some social distancing may be required in private lessons.

Music Department Ensembles (Choir, Orchestra, Chamber Ensembles, Jazz Ensemble and Combo): specific protocols will be determined by the ensemble directors, depending on local conditions.

  • Ensemble members should report any symptoms of COVID to their ensemble director, and not participate in rehearsal.
