ARTIST STATEMENT

I utilize terra cotta to create ceramic sculptures that explore the relationships between the body and nature both through representation and composition. I am drawn by the concept of the body as a vessel and by the way humanity is rooted to the earth. We are reliant on the earth for natural production of fresh air and filtration of water as well as providing sustenance and growth. By mixing my own terra cotta, I created unique clay bodies to compose these pieces and left the clay unglazed to allow the surface stay porous, like skin. By hand building and life casting segments of the body, my work is more objective of the body as a landscape, while balancing environmental and human. Earthenware provides a duality of strength and fragility, a balance in the material for a set of works meant to embody this.
