Breast Cancer: Who's In Charge |
This series was coordinated by Sharon Gormley (Dean of Faculty Office), Lydia Hamessley (Music), Esther Kanipe (History) and Karen Christensen (Director of After Breast Cancer, a support group sponsored by the American Cancer Society). We received organizational assistance from the American Cancer Society and the HERS program at St. Luke's Hospital. We received financial support from the Levitt Center, the Africana Studies Program, the English Department, the Biology Department, the Faculty for Women's Concerns, the Art Department, and the Kirkland Endowment, but the single largest financial contributor was the Kirkland Project. Off campus contributions came from After Breast Cancer and the Slocum-Dickson Medical Foundation.
The events were in general well attended by students, faculty and the public. Some highlights: Byllye Avery's lecture drew about 75 people, a disappointing response but not surprising in light of the fact that half of the county did not have electricity due to the Labor Day storm. Most of the audience was students, and Avery delivered an inspiring, thought provoking lecture.
The panel of doctors, panel of survivors and night of films had a good attendance of 20 to 50 people.
Anna Quindlen's lecture was the biggest draw: the Chapel was full. Many people came early for her book signing, and the lecture was a great success. The audience included many from the Hamilton community, groups of high school students, and many residents of Clinton and Utica.
Dr. Susan Love's talk attracted mostly people from off campus. The first floor of the Chapel was filled, bringing in many who had never attended a campus event before. We hope they will come back for other campus events in the future.
The series was a great success. Our greatest strength was the overwhelmingly positive community response. We did a service for the Mohawk Valley, got lots of good will for the College, learned a great deal-and maybe even helped save a life or two.
