La Selva Projects

The OTS La Selva field station is in lowland evergreen forest at the confluence of the Sarapiqui and Puerto Viejo Rivers in eastern Costa Rica. Although precipitation varies seasonally at La Selva, monthly totals exceed 15 cm even during the "dry season" (average annual rainfall exceeds 4 m). An extensive trail system provides access to primary tropical forest with trees exceeding 40 m height and incredible biological diversity, as well as to numerous experimental forest plots in various stages of succession.

At La Selva we continued the Leaf Diversity Project and sub-groups coordinated three student-designed projects:

Butterfly Diversity

Leaf Cutter Ants

Monstera Morphing
