Conference Goals

A conference that brings together music faculty, librarians, and technologists, will allow a wide variety of skill sets, needs, and interests to be voiced during discussions of music and technology in the liberal arts setting. Accordingly, as groups and as individuals, these participants contribute to the liberal arts education from different angles. There are many common denominators to be found amid the conversation, however, as all face similar questions regarding how best to use technology to enhance their efforts. Currently, there are few opportunities for these educational groups to convene and engage in fruitful discussion on mutual interests regarding music and technology. The conference will provide such a forum for these groups to learn from each other, address some of their questions with expert presentations, and return to their schools with fresh ideas.

Specifically, we have defined the following goals:

  1. To provide a forum where attendees can draw on creativity and group discussion to imagine new music-technological possibilities, whether or not products exist to fulfill those options.
    • Identify aspects of music teaching and learning that could be improved or made more effective with technology.
    • Explore the enhancements that could be accomplished through cooperative efforts within our own institutions and within consortia.
  2. To lay the groundwork for establishing a collective voice on music-technological issues in liberal arts institutions.
    • Learn about and define the primary music-technological hurdles that face each of us as individuals and as part of the various constituencies to which we belong.
    • Form stronger working relationships, both intra- and inter-institutional, built on better understanding of mutual goals and awareness of individual challenges.
  3. To introduce attendees to existing technological enhancements that they may implement at their own institutions.
    • Offer hands-on workshops that provide concrete instruction.
    • Invite vendors to answer questions and offer solutions for their products.
