Love and Marriage in 19th Century England
Beginning with Coventry Patmore’s Angel in the House, and including prose works by J. S. Mill, Barbara Bodichon and others, the course focused on the tensions within most 19th century narratives between the heroine’s intelligence and ambition and the conventions of the Victorian love and marriage plots.

Victorian Science and Literature
Beginning with Tennyson’s In Memoriam and Darwin’s Origin of Species, this course juxtaposed literary and non-literary representations of evolutionary theory. Our focus was to analyze the role of science in Victorian art and culture.
