THE HAMILTON COLLEGE ORCHESTRA

was founded in 1970 and has grown to include more than 70 students. These students represent an extremely wide variety of academic concentrations at Hamilton (from Asian Studies to Physics), as well as hometowns (from Hingham, MA to Fukuoka, Japan).

The Orchestra has undertaken four major concert tours - two through New England, one through Western NY, and the other by invitation of the governments of Romania and Bulgaria to tour those countries for fourteen days.

The Orchestra has performed with internationally renowned bassist, Bertram Turetzky virtuoso performer of the koto, Nanae Yoshimura and commissioned and premiered new works for orchestra by Masataka Matsuo (of Tokyo), Richard Boulanger, Masao Honma (of Sendai, Japan), Jay Reise (class of '72 and Professor of Music at the University of Pennsylvania), Harue Kunieda, and Samuel Pellman, Professor of Music at Hamilton. The performance of Mr. Boulanger's work (1993), for interactive computer, radio baton, and MIDI glove (worn by the conductor), drew publicity from the Associated Press and Syracuse TV Channel 5 (CBS) News. Mr. Matsuo's work was released in early 1996 on an OPUS ONE CD performed by the Hamilton College Orchestra.

Students involved in the Orchestra, as well as in music in general, at Hamilton tend to be very successful both at Hamilton and after Hamilton. Members from the class of '96 will be pursuing a variety of opportunities after Commencement, including: Ph.D. program in biology at Harvard University Ph.D. program in physics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill graduate program in music (conducting) at Ohio State University graduate program in music education at the University of Colorado Ph.D. program in mathematics at Vanderbilt University work with the Dentsu company (Advertising) in Tokyo. During the last 10 years, alumni from the Orchestra have done everything from attending medical and dental schools (University of Pennsylvania, U. of Rochester, and others), to teaching in Scotland and Japan, practicing Entertainment Law, working in Arts Adminstration in Washinton, D.C. and Milwaukee, and working in Advertising in NYC.

Submitting a Tape with your Application to Hamilton

On cassette tape (preferred) or VHS tape, please include two musical works (or movements of works) that demonstrate contrasting styles, and that best show your musical abilities. Please send directly to the Admissions Office. If you are going to visit the campus, why not audition in person! Just contact Professor Buchman.

Auditions for Orchestra

Auditions take place during Orientation Week in August and during the first week of classes during both Fall and Spring terms. Sign-up sheets are posted on Room 233 (List), or call (859-4353) or email Prof. Buchman for an appointment. Please bring something to play that best demonstrates your musical abilities. You will also be asked to sight-read some music, which also helps us to choose literature. There is no reason to be nervous! We try to find something for everyone to do, but still maintain a high standard of performance.

What Orchestra Members have to Say:

"The pieces we do are challenging, but very rewarding."
Cynthia M. Fadem '01, violin

"Orchestra is great! It's a lot of fun, but it is challenging, also. My experience in the Orchestra has enhanced my Hamilton experience greatly. Participation is an opportunity that I do not take for granted."
Julian Baer '02, percussion

"Hamilton's Music program stands far above most of its peers. Very few larger schools have as many opportunities for students, both academic and performing. The ensembles and their conductors are first-class."
Paul Damaske '99, trombone

"One of my fears about coming to a school like Hamilton was that the Orchestra was going to be small and not very technically advanced. Luckily, my first semester in the Hamilton College Orchestra proved me wrong. For a school as small as Hamilton, the Orchestra is an amazing size, and its members are dedicated and passionate about playing music. I know whenever I'm bogged down with papers and readings, I can escape to Orchestra rehearsal... "
Erin Foley '01, violin
