Nurturing Nature

Walt Whitman attempts to explain mankind’s relationship to nature in his “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry”; according to Whitman, mankind interacts with the natural world because, “the natural world connects the living and the dead” (Whitman 137). This work aims to explore this relationship through the use of vivariums as living sculpture.  Nurturing Nature seeks to touch on other commonly associated themes including, furthering our understanding of the role of dependence and nurturing both of and on nature through the work’s form. Likewise, this piece will continue to pursue a greater understanding of these relationships through the piece’s daily growth and maintenance.
