ARTIST STATEMENT
I’m not really sure what to write in my artist’s statement or how to express the journey this year has become. I’ve had to navigate obstacles such as deciphering what I really want my work to be, weighing issues like the geography of my place in the world as an artist and where my work fits in the historical continuum of female portraiture, all the while becoming enamored with fields of color, pools of light and the wet weight of flesh itself. I see the figures in my paintings as guardians, beings with a degree of power that transcends loveliness and monstrosity, beings with the agency necessary to force the reconception of beauty.
