No two Saintrés are alike: translating medieval romance in the digital age

In this informal talk, I'll discuss my recent experience in translating, with Jane Taylor, a late fifteenth-century romance, Le Petit Jehan de Saintré. I'll show how Gallica, the BnF digital library, makes one manuscript available on line and talk about the choices that translators have in conveying this hybrid didactic compilation to modern readers.  We'll also look at examples of early print editions, an 18th-century adaptation, modern scholarly editions, and several earlier translations to see the variety of forms in which Saintré has been transmitted, revived, and transformed.
