The immense popularity of yoga today is forcing a reconsideration of its role in south Asian religious history, the modes of its transmission from East to West, its role in nationalist identity, and the idiosyncratic ways it has come to be practiced in the U.S. I will outline these interpretive developments with some reference to how students are addressing them in the Yoga seminar I offer in Religious Studies
