Music History and Cultures

No matter your musical background, you will find courses that allow you to explore a wide variety of musics. Our offerings include western classical traditions (such as Mus 220 From Chant to Bach and Mus 221 From Bach to Bartók), African-American popular music, opera, music in film, jazz, country music, and Broadway musicals. Classes include considerations of musical elements, the cultural contexts of the music, and issues of diversity. These courses address several of the college’s educational goals, particularly: Aesthetic Discernment, Disciplinary Practice, Intellectual Curiosity and Flexibility, Creativity, Communication and Expression, and Understanding of Cultural Diversity.

Visiting artists on our Performing Arts series offer further opportunities to experience music from a broad range of musical styles and cultures; recent examples include Taiko drums San Jose, jazz pianist Christian Sands, Ping Chong & Co.'s Beyond Sacred program, the Albany Symphony, and the JACK Quartet.
