Music Theory

Regardless of your background in music theory, we have the course for you—one that will help you be a better listener, performer, musician, arranger, and/or composer. Courses in music theory include:

  • Music 110: Introduction to Music Theory
  • Music 210: Music Theory Fundamentals and Chromatic Harmony
  • Music 211: Chromatic Harmony
  • Music 310: Advanced Topics in Music Theory
  • Aural Skills (Music 180 and 280)
  • Keyboard Skills (Music 181 and 281)

Students who have little or no background in music should enroll in Music 110.

Students should enroll in Music 210 if they are already proficient in:

  • Note reading in treble and bass clefs
  • Key and meter signatures
  • Major and minor scales
  • Simple rhythms

Students should enroll in Music 211 if they have:

  • Completed Music 110, or
  • Received a 5 on the AP Music Theory Exam, or
  • Placed into the course via the Music Theory Placement Exam

Students may take the Music Theory Placement Exam to determine their appropriate level of study. You may email Prof. Carter to receive the exam.
