Hamilton Revisited: Sex, Politics and Religion on the Hill in the 1930s

In the mid-1930s a scandal rocked the Hamilton community when an Anglo-Catholic chapel was constructed on the periphery of the campus. The conflict pitted the strait-laced mainstream Protestant old-boy administration of the college against a group of Anglo-Catholics with homosexual and Marxist predilections. Utilizing what scant evidence can be gleaned from the College Archives I will attempt to reconstruct the history of those “Troubles.”
