ARTIST STATEMENT

This year I found myself tracing the loneliness I feel to its roots in disconnection between my family and me. What disturbs me most is that such detachment between parents and their children is part of my family history. As a remedy to save myself from repeating this cycle, I decided to examine my feelings.

Heirloom investigates complex emotions, such as heartache and solitude. Combining the language of abstraction with virtual reality, I attempt to create choreographed, interactive space to induce feelings through its interactions and engagements with the audience.

This project is less a study of emotions, and more of a search for answers to open-ended questions: What can I do to stop feeling lonely? Is it even possible?

These works were made possible through the generosity of the Steven Daniel Smallen Memorial Fund.
