ARTIST STATEMENT
On the anniversary of my grandmother’s death, my family and I perform a traditional Chinese ritual of offering fruit, food, prayers, and incense. My work is a contemplation of this use of fruits and an exploration of the beauty found in their forms. By creating these paintings, I attempt to understand what this ritual means to me and the effect it has on my family. It is a coping mechanism, a celebration, and a means to connect with each other and our ancestors.
These works were made possible through the generosity of the Steven Daniel Smallen Memorial Fund.
