ARTIST STATEMENT

I don’t remember the last time I played with these toys before a few months ago, when I dug them out of my basement to photograph. Close to half my lifetime has passed since I last saw them, and still these pieces of plastic hold a special resonance - they remind me that parts of my childhood continue to exist, despite so much else having changed.

By using my old toys, I imitate my younger self in the act of play, arranging the same objects to construct new scenarios - recontextualizing artifacts of the past to reflect the present. These photographs work to express the tension between childhood and adulthood - how these two things are related but irreconcilable.

Thank you to the Steven Daniel Smallen Memorial Fund for their generous financial support.
