ARTIST STATEMENT

As an Asian American I have always felt a little insulted by my lack of knowledge in Asian culture. My father’s side of the family is originally from China but migrated to Malaysia many generations ago. Malaysia is such a diverse country that incorporates a mixture of Malay, Chinese, and Indian cultures to create their blended history. One of the only ways I have learned about malaysian culture has been through my love of textiles. Every time I have gone to Malaysia I have collected new fabrics each with a different blend of cultures that make the country unique.

My work is a way for me to experiment with the diverse blend of cultures in Malaysia as well as my family’s own blend of Chinese-Malsyian heritage. I reuse the fabrics I have collected and collaged them with images, personal photographs, and digital drawings that are then digitally printed. In having some of my work being printed onto fabric I am attempting to bring my art back into my interest with the culture being displayed within textiles.
