Call for Teachers 2019

Exciting Opportunity for Innovative Philosophy Teachers

Do you want to try a new pedagogical technique? Do you have an idea for a new  approach to some particular text, or a new text? Do you lack the opportunity to experiment with strong, intrinsically motivated students? The Hamilton College Summer Program in Philosophy may be your chance!

The Summer Program in Philosophy seeks proposals from three creative philosophy instructors for teaching a two-week undergraduate summer seminar, June 23–July 9, 2019.  We expect to run three classes with twenty highly motivated and philosophically inclined students, drawn from both Hamilton College and other schools. All students will take the three classes concurrently. No college credit will be awarded. In addition to faculty and students, we may bring in current graduate students to serve as teaching assistants supporting faculty, students, or the program more generally. The Summer School will culminate, for faculty, with a presentation of your work in a one-day interdisciplinary conference focused on pedagogy, on Monday, July 8, 2019.

Classes should be aimed at advanced undergraduates, active, engaging, and inclusive for all participants. We are open to proposals for teaching any kind of philosophical content and welcome proposals that emphasize skills over content as well as ones that focus on rigorous philosophical content. We are interested in fostering an atmosphere of cooperation and support, passion for philosophy, in a diverse community, without unhealthy competition. Proposals will be evaluated by our estimation of their likelihood of generating an exciting, pedagogically innovative, challenging, student-centered experience for all participants.

Housing, meals, some office space, and up to $500 of reimbursement for travel will be provided, along with a $4000 stipend. Students and teaching assistants will also receive stipends.

To propose a course, send a single pdf containing:

  • A name and description of the two-week course;
  • A brief discussion of its pedagogical innovation;
  • (Optional) A description of how you might be able to use a teaching assistant to prepare for classes, during classes, or to support students outside of class (suggestions for particular teaching assistants are welcome);
  • Any technology or special equipment you might want to use in the course;
  • (Optional) The names of one or two external speakers that could support your course goals;
  • A budget for any ancillary items from which your course might benefit.

In addition, please send any relevant evidence of teaching experience and excellence. Send all materials to the HCSPiP director, Russell Marcus, rmarcus1@hamilton.edu, by September 16, 2018. We expect to notify applicants by the end of October, so we can proceed to invite applications from students. For more information, contact Russell at the same email address.
