ARTIST STATEMENT:

When I dream of my summers in Russia, the landscapes are fading. There, the flowers are dripping, perspectives are skewed, and objects come in and out of focus. Admittedly, I look back upon this time in my village with the naivete of an adolescent. I remember only the best parts, with details gradually forgotten and abstracted by nostalgia. Old snapshots fail to reflect the imagery and sensations I so clearly recall in my memories. They succeed in stopping time and capturing the reality of a present moment, but they don’t always feel right.

I use painting to document the fragmentation of my memory over time. Through this process, I reinterpret my personal history by merging photographic reality with my own remembered perceptions. My style blends my early influences of Russian Impressionism with Contemporary Surrealism to portray a world partly realistic, partly dream-like.

I would like to thank the Steven Daniel Smallen Memorial fund for their generous support.
