ARTIST STATEMENT:

The rich history of Hamilton College and Hamilton-Oneida Academy is largely unspoken of in the community, but is so instrumental in understanding the context that the college was founded on. Understanding the school’s heritage is in keeping with its motto, “Know Thyself.”

This project presents Hamilton’s history from a graphical perspective. Stripping down the excess from the narrative, I created a set of banners that depict ideas central to race, religion, education and land. The figures depicted include Alexander Hamilton, Reverend Samuel Kirkland and Chief Skenandoah of the Oneida Nation. I installed these banners across campus in February with the hope that they would stimulate conversation across the community.

The second portion of this project consists of an accordian-style book made up of connected panels. It depicts the narrative of the history, as well as the concepts I utilized in creating the banners. The style is the same as the banners, but the imagery and purpose are different. This book is a graphical documentation of my creative process and the history surrounding Hamilton College
