Artist Statement
My subject is the isolated figure that resides within the mundane: the in-between lives of those we see but often pay no attention. For me, these paintings are about the beauty of seeing, of being cognizant of the world around me and attempting to find an intersection between the paint, my subject, and the tension of the moment. Based on observation of architectural and anatomical diagrams, my paintings strive to understand both the interior and exterior of subjects, exploring the relationship between body and enveloping space. In disrupting traditional ways of expression, my works contain representations of slight structural distortions, which appear to be in confrontation. The use of reclaimed wood as canvas allows for deeper meaning to be attached to the subject, as imperfections of the wood hint to a deeper history. Exploring nature as a motif, it signifies reclamation, health, and a feeling of serenity amongst disruption. The human connection to nature can be understood as, and inclusive of, our adaptive interdependence with nature as well as our longstanding actions and experiences that connect us to nature.
