Artist Statement

In this series, Dwelling in the Moment, I examine the world of emotions and relationships through the use of two mediums – photography and text. In imagining the role of the artist as a communicator, this series tells a story through recording intimate moments. We feel when we write down personal thoughts, capture a private moment, or reflect on an argument. In documenting our experiences, we can grab onto a specific instant in a relationship. Photography and journaling both work as mediums of recording. A photo can capture a moment in time, stuck in a constant present, while a journal entry encapsulates an elongated moment – one of reflection and a judgment of thoughts and desires. The two together can weave a fascinating narrative; one that still leaves the reader to form their own interpretation of the interaction between text and image. As in a film and its score, each aspect is striking in its own respect, but together they are monumental. The sum is greater than its parts. Reactions are complex, intimate moments. I expect viewers will react to the photographic prints, pulling out layers of the story and building on the narrative. In tandem with the prints, the book is a chronicle of human relationships through time – a disjointed personal narrative. Interact closely with it, try to understand the emotions, and examine the intricacies of the seemingly mundane.
