Artist Statement

I spatialize mathematical concepts. My work is based on principles of linearity, repetition, and rhythm. I repeat lines and shapes but add nuance to create visual emphasis and movement. An aspect of my process investigates the efficiency of workflow: I sequence my labor into multiple stages and focus on individual steps within those stages.

(Non)Rigid Motion is a continuation of my former art installations in Christian A. Johnson Hall and Kennedy Center for Theatre and the Studio Arts at Hamilton College, combining two strong transparent materials, monofilament and acrylic sheets. I employ these materials in my artwork to interact with the surrounding environment. Transparency is powerful because it deemphasizes the material. It enhances the viewer’s sensitivity to the experience of space and light within the environment.

Thanks to the Art Department, the Wellin Museum of Art, and the Steven Daniel Smallen Memorial Fund for their support.
